About Event

The Sea Ranch Lodge is proud to host the world-renowned musician, R. Carlos Nakai, the premier performer of the Native American flute, in an intimate performance and reception on September 11, 2022. Nakai will be accompanied by drummer Will Clipman.

During this performance, Big Sur Artist, Erin Lee Gafill, will live-paint an oversized canvas in response to the music. At the end of the performance, this painting will be offered in silent auction, a limited edition of signed and numbered prints of this piece will also be available. Proceeds from the sale of the painting and prints will be donated to The Kashia.

This exclusive event will be followed by a champagne toast and an intimate reception with the artists in The Fireside Lounge. Complimentary beer and wine, accompanied by appetizers will also be served.

Of Navajo Ute heritage, Nakai began playing the traditional Native American flute in the early 1980’s and released more than 50 albums in his career.  In 2014, Canyon Trilogy reached Platinum (over 1 million units sold), the first ever for a Native American artist.  In addition to his solo appearances throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, Nakai has worked with guitarist William Eaton, flutist Paul Horn, composers James DeMars and Phillip Glass and various symphony orchestras.  Nakai has received 11 Grammy nominations.

As an artist, Nakai has expressed, “Our primary importance as musicians is trying to tell people that history can’t be changed, but the future can be.  Personally, I feel I should try to contribute something that will encourage people to change, to reorganize and reorient themselves together with one another instead of continuing to build walls.”

Will Clipman, entranced by the world of percussion, has over one hundred indigenous instruments in his pan-global percussive palette.  He has over 60 recordings, seven Grammy nominations, 3 Native American Music Awards and has been inducted into the Tucson Musicians Museum for his contributions to the musical community in his hometown.   Alongside his achievements in the world of music, he studied both creative writing and poetry. Will believes that language well-used and sound can transform, heal, inspire and bring change in unpredictably positive ways.

Erin Lee Gafill is an award-winning artist and teacher. Recently her work was featured in two museum exhibitions, Color Duets - Kaffe Fassett | Erin Lee Gafill at the Monterey Museum of Art and California Atmosphere at The Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka. Work created during her month-long residency at The Sea Ranch Lodge will be on exhibit at Simon Bull’s Meuse Gallery in St. Helena September 10 to 24.

Through her work Gafill inspires an appreciation of the natural world, and the spirit of creativity that shines in each of us. “I am honored to be included in this once in a lifetime experience.”

We look forward to spending this special evening with you.
