About Event

Laury Cullen is a Forestry Engineer. He has a Master’s Degree from the University of Florida (USA) an Ph.D. from the University of Kent (UK) a Post-Doctoral from Columbia University. He has concentrated his research in mammal ecology, conservation and restoration of fragmented landscapes, community empowerment and best agroforestry practices. He has published more than 80 articles. He is an Ashoka fellow for social empowerment and has received several awards, including the Rolex Conservation Award, the Whitley Gold Award from England’s Princess Anne, a prize considered the Oscar for conservation and, more recently, the International Award from the Society for Restoration Ecology.

He works for ipe in Brazil - www.ipe.org.br

The main research projects under development he is currently involved in include:

1) Jaguars (Panthera onca) as landscapes detectives for the Brazilian Atlantic Forest;

2) Agroforestry and landscape restoration in the Atlantic forest, Brazil;

3) Community based landscape conservation in Pontal do Paranapanema, Brazil;

4) Methodology development for the valuation of the "natural capital" and ecosystem services provided by forest restoration initiatives of Brazilian companies;

5) Climate, Community and Biodiversity: landscape restoration and income generation in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest;

6) Methodology development for biodiversity monitoring based on Genetic Metagenomics.

7) Corridors for Life. Climate, Community and Biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest.
