Forced Leisure: Monster Memorial Day BBQ at Nonplus Ultra
May 26, 2025
3pm-10pm
$10 suggested donation at the door
We’re throwing a party to celebrate and raise funds for the second cycle of Kyle Patrick Robert’s experimental theater work Forced Leisure on May 26.
True to the chaotic spirit of the show, the party will feature music, food and drink, and optional but encouraged activities that invite you into the world of Forced Leisure including a wet t-shirt and whale tail competition.
All funds collected at this event will go directly towards the production of Forced Leisure II.
ABOUT FORCED LEISURE
Forced Leisure is an experimental theater work in three chapters that correspond to the British Military concept of its namesake. Each chapter takes one of the three definitions of “forced leisure” — relaxation, sport, and community — as its armature, using them to conduct an autobiographical survey of performance artist Kyle Patrick Robert’s life growing up in Southern California and its unique political economy.
In the coming year, Roberts will debut an excerpt from the second chapter of the work, which focuses on the 2003 X-Games and its impact on the Inland Empire — the geographical area that sits between Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego County — examining sport, the psychosexual dynamics latent within male homosocial activities, and the early roots of Trumpian America. In particular, the work will include a reimagining of the iconic motocross duel between Disney-backed Travis Pastrana and his bad-boy adversary Brian Deegan.
