​Hosted by Wantedly and Asia Startup Network, in partnership with University At Buffalo (UB) Alumni Association, this event provides an exclusive dialogue with Dr. Xiong Jinjun, Director of UB's Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and a chance to connect with like-minded builders who believe in using technology for the greater good.

​Introduction

​Dr. Xiong is a distinguished Empire Innovation Professor at the University at Buffalo, leading their AI and Data Science Institute. He's a key figure in national AI initiatives for education, and previously served as a Program Director for AI and Hybrid Clouds Systems at IBM, where he co-founded a successful cognitive computing research centre. His research focuses on across-stack AI systems, with many of his innovations adopted in IBM products. A prolific author of over 200 papers, he's won numerous best paper awards and international competitions.

​Discussion

​Dr. Xiong believes we're at the cusp of a major AI-driven transformation that extends beyond technology to reshape what's possible. He highlights that despite this progress, significant societal needs, particularly in education and sustainability, remain unaddressed due to a lack of profitable business models.

​His core question is: Can AI advancements be leveraged to scale intelligent solutions for these "earthly needs"? As part of his work, he proposes a structured approach to this, outlining the reasoning, technical methods, and research hurdles involved. Ultimately, his goal is to democratise AI to create a better society, which he sees as opening new avenues for collaboration across various foundational AI fields like automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, computer vision, multimodality perception, edge AI, and AI embodiment.
