Our Speakers

Jenna & Nav

Sensand

Jenna is a geospatial scientist who uses satellites to tackle large-scale environmental challenges and is the in-house science nerd at Sensand. In a previous life, they were a researcher using satellites to hunt for plastic pollution on remote islands and track logging and bushfires in forests across 30+ years.

Nav is currently a lead data engineer at an agri-tech startup. He’s previously worked with non-spatial data as a software engineer at Linktree and in E-Commerce across various agencies and startups in New Zealand. Working for the first time with geospatial data, he's attempting to learn the ropes and build a data stack that navigates this new terrain.

As newcomers to the world of geospatial science, some members of our team encountered a noticeable gap in communication with our resident scientist. This gap extended across the software teams, leading to delays in discourse, testing, and feature release.

To enhance collaboration, we shifted our communication strategies, reducing our reliance on localized desktop applications like QGIS and adopting Jupyter Notebooks in a cloud environment. This transition led to increased usage of notebooks as we aimed to shorten release cycles by productionizing these notebooks—a strategy that isn't recommended. We would attempt to discover why.
