A+C FEST: “Meet the Mariachi Los Caimanes”
On behalf of the University of Houston-Downtown’s Cultural Enrichment Center and the Department of Arts and Communication within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, we welcome you to attend the Arts & Communication Festival. The 2021 theme is “Lockdown and Released,” reflecting the 12+ months that our global community has endured the COVID-19 pandemic. This global experience has ruptured normalcy, and our theme explores all the things we have had to do to adapt, survive, and thrive. This year’s festival is dedicated to people who are ready to think in new ways about their possible future. Our virtual format convenes a wide variety of exceptional speakers and performers from an even wider geographical reach. This event is extra special since it features a behind-the-scenes experience with the official mariachi for the University of Houston-Downtown: Los Caimanes!
ABOUT THE EVENT:
“Mariachi Los Caimanes: Meet the ensemble“
Join us in an intimate conversation with the University of Houston-Downtown’s Mariachi Los Caimanes who will share about Mariachi culture, how this music impacts their lives, stories of their experience performing with the ensemble, how they stayed motivated during the pandemic, and much more.
Bring your questions, be ready to explore answers, and leave with an amplified vision of how we continue to adapt and thrive in a world in flux.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
In a short time, the University of Houston-Downtown’s Mariachi Los Caimanes has earned local acclaim as a musical group on the rise. With the mission to create positive experiences through music for all while honoring culture, Los Caimanes use their talent to foster a sense of school spirit and pride at UHD, while promoting friendship amongst the community and raising awareness of cultural music's impact on student growth and development.
The success of Mariachi Los Caimanes can be attributed to the resiliency of the students in the group. They have overcome many challenges… navigating family life, work schedules, and a lack of full band rehearsals because of COVID-19. In spite of this, they were able to incorporate into last year’s Day of the Dead production at Miller Outdoor Theater and join the H-Town Votes Live initiative at MECA Houston.
Mariachi Los Caimanes is open to all currently enrolled UHD students.
