As facilitators, it’s rare that we get to spend a day improving our own practice.
This session is a space where we get to come together as facilitators to expand our toolbox, connect with like-minded and similarly oriented people, and dig into the nitty-gritty details of facilitation that can make all the difference in our work.
You’ll walk away inspires with new connections, new ideas, and a deeper understanding and ability to use Facilitator Cards to plan, improvise, and respond to your group no matter what scenario you face as a facilitator.
Registration for this session closes Sunday, March 27.
"I felt like I was learning in 3 different ways - content shared from Meg, the activities she designed for us to participate with/in, and learning from the other participants both during the scenario responses and just during the breakout room convos. Maybe that was more than 3 ways? My point is, LOTS of engaging learning."
~ Rachel Myers - December Intensive Participant
OUTLINE
The intensive will be 5 hours including a 30-minute meal break in the middle.
Part 1: (2 hours)
What is facilitation?
When is facilitation the tool we want to reach for (and when is it not)?
Where are our growth edges as facilitators?
Key components of Facilitator Cards
MEAL BREAK (30 mins)
This is when we refuel. If you want to connect with others while you nom, that option will be there!
Part 2: (2.5 hours)
What does it mean to think like a facilitator?
What are the major levers that we can pull as facilitator to change the energy, momentum, and pace of a workshop?
Scenario work - If we were faced with this specific facilitation scenario, what would we do? This will be the bulk of part 2 to allow for detailed and specific conversations and examples.
How do we integrate all this understanding into our practice?
"When I attended this training I realized I often feel very judge-y and blame-y of my participants. Adults so often fail to meet my expectations and it can feel personally disrespectful! But sometime in the second half of the training I realized I can be creative in the ways I handle those patterns. I have tools to make it more interesting for me and them, and I don't have to feel moody and weird in my head."
~ Sofie - December Intensive Attendee
WHY JOIN IN?
The focus of this training is to give ourselves the time and space to intentionally think about our craft as facilitators. There are a few ways that we shape this experience for facilitators to learn.
(1) Being participants again. So often we’re the ones leading a session and we rarely have opportunities to sit in the ‘participant seat’ and remember what it’s like to be facilitated. Spending some time in that space, being facilitated, experiencing what the activities and Facilitator Cards are like as a participant provides valuable insight into our facilitation practice.
(2) Facilitator Community. It’s easy to feel alone in this work and like people don’t understand our challenges and frustrations. Being together with facilitators gives us a chance to hear from each other’s creative working solutions and ideas.
(3) Spacious Scenario Work. We create a space in this workshop where we can really think through scenarios we face and get creative and introspective about our solutions. This allows us to be more thoughtful and creative in coming up with new ideas for moments we may default to the same activities over and over in our work.
