About Event

How do dogs navigate their environment, given that their environment primarily is designed by and for humans?

In this talk Julia Espinosa will share her research about how dogs see and perceive the physical world around them. She will discuss the latest research in physical cognition and how you can apply that your life with your pet.

About The Speaker: Julia Espinosa is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, researching how dogs learn about and interact with physical objects in the world. Some of the research questions she currently works on are looking at dogs’ understanding of physical properties of objects (such as solidity) and how dogs recognize cause-and-effect relationships. Before beginning her doctorate, Julia studied dog play behaviour at the University of Michigan and as a visiting scholar at the Veterinary Medicine University in Vienna (Austria). Her first Master's thesis investigated human recognition of dog fear signals at the University of Guelph (Canada) and was followed by a second Master's from the University of Toronto where she began studying canine cognition. In addition to investigating how dogs think and learn about the world, Julia has several years of experience as a dog walker, veterinary assistant, and positive reinforcement dog trainer.
