About Event

Overview
In what many consider as a ‘tired’ and ‘broken’ Britain that has just delivered a landslide victory for the Labour party, how can a focus on ‘care’ help organisations to campaign effectively for social and environmental change?

Care ethics focus on vulnerability and interdependence, the fact that we are all vulnerable and dependent on each other in order to survive. Defining care in this broad manner (and not simply as ‘social care’) can help us reflect on:

  • how ‘care’ can inform campaign messaging and appeal to audience values and emotions

  • how it can be used to bring organisations together under the same umbrella when they are pursuing campaigns in coalition

  • how they can they can institute policies and practices that support campaigning in the long term by helping staff, members and the public in general to avoid burnout and ‘compassion fatigue’.

Agenda
18:00 Welcome
18:30 Anastasia Kavada (LinkedIn) presenting and leading discussion
19:00 Discussion and social

The purpose
The main purpose is to connect people organising for progressive change as we are strong and more effective when we network. For many, it is also to re-ignite connections and continue sharing and learning from each other after many have met and learned so much from others to keep passing on this learning.

Participants include

  1. Current students and alumni of the MA

  2. Campaigning Forum community members/allies (e.g. NEON members)

  3. Anyone interested in either of the above and campaigning for change

The host
Michaela O'Brien (Head of Westminster School of Media and Communication) hosts the event. She leads the MA in Media, Campaigning and Social Change at the University of Westminster and had a wealth of knowledge, ideas and connections to share.
