About Event

The purpose
The main purpose is to connect people organising for progressive change as we are strong and more effective when we network. For many, it is also to re-ignite connections and continue sharing and learning from each other after many have met and learned so much from others to keep passing on this learning.

Participants include

  1. Current students and alumni of the MA

  2. Campaigning Forum community members/allies (e.g. NEON members)

  3. Anyone interested in either of the above and campaigning for change

Agenda
18:00 Welcome
18:30 Presentation: Understanding and resisting disinformation, Justin Schlosberg (U. of Westminster - details below)
19:00 Discussion and social

Presentation by Justin Schlosberg

The starting point for this talk is that how we perceive, think and talk about disinformation is often a reflection of our own particular belief systems and prejudicial worldviews, as well as the power structure we inhabit. This calls for a critical perspective on how disinformation is problematised, especially by powerful actors as well as those within our own sociocultural networks and spheres. The finishing point will be to consider how best to resist both disinformation itself, and the force of repression that often surfaces in its wake.

Justin Schlosberg is Professor of Media and Communications at CAMRI, University of Westminster, a co-founder of the Institute for Journalism and Social Change, a former Chair of the Media Reform Coalition and former Edmund J Safra Network Fellow at Harvard University. He is the author of several books about the media, most recently Disinformation: A Critical Perspective (Emerald, forthcoming 2025).

The host
Michaela O'Brien (Head of Westminster School of Media and Communication) hosts the event. She leads the MA in Media, Campaigning and Social Change at the University of Westminster and had a wealth of knowledge, ideas and connections to share.
