BACLS seminar: Charlotte Beyer, Decolonising the Literature Curriculum

​In this first of two BACLS book prize seminars we are joined by Charlotte Beyer, the editor of an important and inspiring contribution to pedagogic literature. Decolonising the Literature Curriculum offers a wide range of practical and theoretically-informed perspectives from a global team of authors engaged in the work of decolonizing their literature curricula in countries including Canada, the US, South Africa, Turkey, Portugal, the UK and Australia. The book is split into two parts: the first covering texts, with reflections on decolonising the canon; the second covering contexts, with case studies demonstrating the development of a decolonised pedagogy to engage changing audiences. BACLS judges praised the book as ‘a highly distinctive and vital contribution to contemporary scholarship’, and an ‘original intervention in one of the most pressing issues in contemporary literary studies, particularly in pedagogy . . . invaluable and highly accessible.’

​We’re excited to have an opportunity to follow-up on a well-attended 2022 BACLS workshop on DTC, with this seminar. It will feature a discussion between the editor, Charlotte Beyer and interlocutors including one of the volume contributors. There will also be time for an audience Q&A. This seminar will be invaluable both for experienced lecturers looking for examples of decolonisation in practice and for early career academics seeking guidance and inspiration.
