Thinking Surfaces & Neo-Hylomorphism
Join us for a hybrid workshop at CRASSH that explores the intersection of French contemporary thought and the evolving philosophical questions of the 21st century. This event delves into the ongoing dialogue between empiricists/materialists and phenomenologists/idealists, especially in light of global challenges like AI, genetic engineering, climate change, and health crises. We will examine how these issues reshape philosophical frameworks, focusing on the surfaces of apparition and being, as well as the resurgence of hylomorphism.
Featuring thinkers like Catherine Malabou, Gilbert Simondon, and Jacques Derrida, the workshop will explore new topological and topographic approaches to understanding the world. We will discuss the need for innovative philosophical models to engage with the sciences—from biology to physics—and their impact on our understanding of the environment and the human body.
Speakers:
James Martell, Lyon College, Visiting Fellow at CRASSH
Professor Ian James, University of Cambridge
Associate Professor Adam Rosenthal, Texas A&M
Cécile Malaspina, Independent Researcher
