Building Community, Engaging Authentically
Pilas, the Suviv Network, Houston Haitians United, and Roldyne Dolce come together to explore the power of understanding community needs before implementing change.
Learning before Acting
This event focuses on a critical theme: learning before acting. Through a case study of Houston’s Haitian community, we will delve into a methodology that emphasizes understanding community-specific resilience factors, cultural strengths, and health priorities. By listening and learning from the community’s unique needs, we can create sustainable improvements in areas like economic opportunity, environmental resilience, and nutrition.
Roldyne Dolce, MPH, CHES®:
A global-minded public health practitioner, Roldyne has spent over seven years addressing issues intersecting with health equity, maternal and child health, and health policy. Currently pursuing her Doctor of Public Health at UTHealth School of Public Health, she combines rigorous research with creative outreach, such as her children’s book, “Does God Have a Belly Button?” Her work bridges community-based interventions, policy, and education, making her an invaluable guide to understanding effective, community-sensitive public health approaches.
UN Sustainable Development Goals Alignment:
This event aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being – fostering health equity and understanding specific health needs before creating programs.
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – addressing the unique needs of a community and promoting inclusive interventions.
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals – as it brings together local organizations and experts to work collaboratively on community-driven solutions.
