About Event

Femicide is the killing of a woman or girl because of her sex or gender. The term is not used in The Bahamas or the rest of the Caribbean which means the killings of women and girls are not properly counted or analyzed. We'll be in conversation with Taitu Heron about her research on femicide in select countries in the Caribbean. We are sure to get into cases of femicide, including at least one that resulted from neglect by the State. We are looking forward to finding a way forward in research on femicide and ensuring that cases are recorded and the analysis contributes to the work to prevent femicide and gender-based violence.

Taitu Heron is a Senior Development Expert/Human Rights Advocate and Performance Poet managing projects, leading rights-based intersectional development planning, and providing training and analysis in Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI). Specializing in the political economy of gender, gender-based violence, labour participation, democratic leadership, and LGBTQ+ inclusion, Taitu's work with international and regional partners, government, academia, and civil society results in inclusive policies, impactful research, and planning tools such social impact assessments, gender action plans, feasibility studies, vulnerability analyses and socio-legal assessments.
