It recently occurred to me that the two most important contemporary writing forms—the newsletter and the tweet—are both essentially essays.
So we should study the essay form. Beginning with the first commercially modern essayist, Samuel Johnson. He published his essays to paying subscribers, hundreds of years before Substack. What can we learn from him?
