About Event

🎬 Dive into four captivating films that reveal bold ocean restoration in action, from underwater art battling trawling to regenerative seaweed farms, impossible cleanups, and thriving marine sanctuaries.

This UN Oceans Day official side event explores four powerful approaches to restoring the ocean through film and media. This meetup will showcase exciting ocean films and provide an opportunity to learn and discuss how communication can be a tool for ocean conservation. The documentaries presented are: (1) House of Fish – Paolo Fanciulli’s trawling deterrent via underwater sculptures in Tuscany (Trailer, pw: paolo); (2) Pacific Mission – Plastic Odyssey’s cleanup of Henderson Island (Link); (3) C-FAARER – regenerative seaweed farming in Ireland/Norway (Link); and (4) The Blue Quest Palawan – documenting successful MPAs in the Philippines.

After a short screening, a panel of filmmakers, producers, scientists, and activists will discuss how storytelling and science drive impact and support SDG 14. Organized by Sea Going Green, Plastic Odyssey, IOFF, The Blue Quest, and IN DEPTH film and media.

After a long day at the UN Oceans Conference, join our event to be dazzled by ocean imagery and clips—and link up with passionate ocean storytellers over a much-deserved drink. We hope to see you there at Hotel Mama Shelter, just a 10-minute walk from the main conference venue.

💖 Support our organizations

Sea Going Green is a sustainable tourism enterprise that helps the (marine and coastal) tourism industry reduce their environmental impact while boosting economic resilience. Focused on the blue economy, we provide tailored strategies to support ocean conservation through eco-friendly operations, carbon reduction, and community engagement. Our work, with the public and private sector, empowers destinations and businesses to align profitability with the protection of marine ecosystems.

Plastic Odyssey has set out to help solve - and raise global awareness around - the devastating human and environmental impacts of plastic pollution. Through a unique and multifaceted approach, we are: (1) Advancing innovative, affordable solutions to recycle and transform plastic waste into valuable materials; (2) Supporting local communities, economies and entrepreneurs worldwide where resource recovery is in high demand; and (3) Working to restore biodiverse ecosystems.

Our goal is to create a global network of recycling initiatives that help support local economies and lead to lasting change.

Launched in 2004, The International Ocean Film Festival takes place every year in San Francisco and is at date the biggest film festival dedicated to the Ocean. The mission of the International Ocean Film Foundation is to be the premier global platform for ocean literacy and education through independent film.

The Blue Quest is a French NGO working to highlight marine conservation success stories and the people behind, through self-produced videos and documentaries.

The last one, The Blue Quest Palawan, has been viewed more than 100 000 times and has been screened in many international events (OOC, Stanford Sustainability Summit, World Impact Summit,...). It is used worldwide as an advocacy tool for marine protected areas.

IN DEPTH is a purpose-driven media production company, sharing compelling stories that stimulate human-nature connection while accelerating momentum for solutions to the climate crisis.

With Ocean health and restoration at the heart of our work we endeavour to inspire global audiences to act as caretakers of our planet. Amplifying awareness and driving action for sustainable climate initiatives through creative and deeply captivating storytelling is our passion. We aim to inspire and empower audiences to actively engage in environmental change, turning viewers into participants of climate impact.

Our debut film - Casa dei Pesci | House of Fish is a remarkable story focused on Paolo Fanciulli's radical effort to combat the illegal destructive practice of bottom trawling. Paolo, a humble fisherman, has created an underwater museum by installing large marble sculptures on the seabed on the coast of Tuscany, Italy.

This creative activism prevents illegal trawler nets from damaging the Ocean floor and saving the vital Posidonia Oceanica ecosystem. Acting not only as a deterrent, but a powerful statement. Paolo’s story has the ability to create a meaningful long lasting impression and has the power to shift people’s consciousness and drive them to action.
