Fighting the Long Defeat: Overcoming the Failures of Imagination
Facilitated by Zack Petersen and Dr. Daniel Palazuelos
“I have fought the long defeat and brought other people on to fight the long defeat, and I'm not going to stop because we keep losing...We want to be on the winning team, but at the risk of turning our backs on the losers, no, it's not worth it. So you fight the long defeat.”—Dr. Paul Farmer
The struggle for equity is unpredictable. What can we learn from those before us who have maintained commitment despite periods of loss? This conversation is not about winning, it is about the long defeat and bringing others on to fight.
Join Dan Palazuelos (Partners in Health) and Zack Petersen (The 1000 Days Fund) to discuss how this legacy of commitment despite calamity continues to serve as a beacon for protecting vulnerable populations and advancing global health equity.
From the outskirts of Chiapas, Mexico to the islands of Indonesia, individuals and organizations are searching for hope in a sea of confusion. A lot of us are left asking, what should we do next?
We are part of a legacy that involves a commitment to global health equity, community action, and social justice. And embodying that legacy means going beyond conversations about scale and cost-effectiveness and focusing on human relationships, developing and implementing innovative healthcare delivery models that are durable and effective in low-resource settings, advocating for policies that support marginalized populations in ALL settings, and building partnerships between institutions and individuals to leverage resources and expertise. This can include collaborations like Dan coming to walk alongside the 1000 Days Fund team in some of the most rural and remote villages in Indonesia, sharing his insights from more than a decade in the field.
