Concrete Blockheads (Sub-team of CCL's Greenhouse Gas Removal Action Team) – July 16th Meeting
GGReAT Blockheads,
Just in the weeks since we last met, climate-intensified heat waves and hurricanes have broken records and taken lives; we’ve got our work cut out for us! In this meeting, we’ll cover two basic relevant lines of attack: decarbonizing the cement production process, and policy to promote greener concrete.
More specifically you’ll learn how Original Portland Cement (OPC) is produced, some of the ways the process can be decarbonized, and how the cement industry is rising to the challenge. We’ll also discuss two state-level legislative proposals in Colorado and New York.
Martin Vogt will lead the cement-related part of our agenda. If you can, please read this document ahead of time; it has an excellent real-world overview of our topic. Martin worked over 2 decades for Heidelberg Materials. In North America, Heidelberg is a leading supplier of cement, aggregates, ready mixed concrete, and asphalt. His executive leadership there focused on strategic finance decision-making, including acquisitions and divestitures. Martin now works as a consultant and climate advocate.
Chris Neidl will discuss concrete relevant legislative proposals developing in Colorado and New York. Chris is Director of Initiatives at Rethinking Removals, co-founder of Open Air Collective, and a Concrete and Cement Decarbonization Policy Consultant for Natural Resources Defense Council.
