MLOps Meetup Sept 2024 (Two Talks)
Tonight we’ll be hearing from:
Martin Lellep on "Searchable handwritten notes using Edge-AI". From Martin:
I am an Applied Scientist with ML and Computational Physics experiences and I am almost-done-with-my-PhD™.
Over the last few months, I have worked on a hobby project to implement an ML feature for Xournal++, which is the largest open-source handwriting note app in the world with >10k Github stars and a user base that is similarly large. I have developed a plugin using Python and Lua to make all existing handwritten note files of all the >10k+ users searchable. After introducing you to my project, I will share with you what I learned about deploying Edge-AI models that will run locally on consumer hardware. Note that this project is still work in progress."
Michelle Galea on "Keeping an eye on AI". From Michelle:
I have worked in academia, the public sector and industry. In all I addressed the challenges of managing data from different perspectives. From the strategic, such as planning for government-wide information systems, to the research level, when designing AI techniques for knowledge discovery.
My talk isn’t about AI acting as Big Brother. It’s about Big Brother watching you as you develop AI.
Certain industries, such as Finance, Healthcare and Gambling, are highly regulated by government and national bodies. In the last year I have been working in Healthcare, focussing on ensuring our AI development process meets emerging regulatory requirements. I’ll start by giving a flavour of what’s required to develop software in a regulated industry and outline a pragmatic approach for extending this to AI development. As part of the discussion, we'll explore what the regulators’ concerns about AI are. We'll question if they’re justified, and discuss if regulatory requirements are likely to do more harm or good to the future of AI in general.
We will be hosted again this evening in the Bayes Centre. Plan for the evening:
18:30: doors open
18:30 -> 19:00: chat / pizza
19:00 -> 20:00: talks + q/a
20:00 -> 20:30: tidy-up / head to nearby bar
20:30: event close
