Intro to QLab Workshop (Theater Tech 101)
This workshop is free and open for anyone to attend.
What is QLab? / How do you control light and sound in a theater?
So many theaters use QLab! I wish more people knew this software, so they could help with their community theaters.
QLab is a Mac-only software that can control lights via DMX, audio (microphones, speakers) and projections (like Powerpoint, etc).
Note: the photo for the event isn't QLab itself, it's a separate lighting console ETC EOS that we will NOT be covering today. It's just my tech-iest photo I had handy!
Who should attend?
Want to learn how to do "tech" for a theater you love? Come see what it's all about!
So far I've gotten folks interested from:
Baltimore Improv Group (https://www.bigimprov.org/)
Third Wall Productions (https://thirdwall.org/)
Submersive Productions (https://www.submersiveproductions.com/)
What will we cover?
Some of my QLab tricks:
How to NOT forget steps 😅
Fading in/out audio; how to start a track 0:13 seconds in
How to control our stage lights in QLab
Organizing a messy cue list
How to get a "you are here" marker (coloring cues)
You'll also learn at a higher level what "tech" activities there are behind the scenes for live theater. These concepts apply to any theater, and any tech stack.
Where?
This will be at Red Emma's Free School, in Waverly.
Bring this training to your theater?
If you can gather a group of 6 people interested in learning QLab, Casey will do this sort of workshop again sometime! If you don't have quite that many people interested, consider teaming up with another theater to get enough people.
Don't forget to bring a laptop!
Hopefully you can bring a Mac computer, since QLab is mac-only
What if I only have a Windows/Linux computer? Or no laptop?
You can still attend!
I'll pair people up to edit QLab together
You'll learn a lot from the presentations and non-QLab activities.
