Fri-DIYs: MCP, anyone?
Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into Fri-DIYs, Lorong AI's immersive workshop series where participants gain hands-on experience implementing AI technologies through guided experimentation in an intimate, collaborative learning environment. (Lorong AI members will be prioritized for the session)
S1E5: MCP, anyone?
Get ready to roll up your sleeves for this hands-on MCP workshop! In this practical session, you'll learn how to build and implement a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server - the foundation for creating structured, reliable AI tool interactions.
In this workshop, you will:
Understand the structure of a tool server that follows the MCP format
Learn how to receive a tool request and return a valid response
Build and run a minimal MCP server in one of three languages: Python, TypeScript, or Go
Be able to test the interaction locally using a simple curl command or HTTP client
Learn how to implement a very simple tool server to accept a tool_use request, return a valid tool_response and be implemented in a fully working MCP-compatible server in Python using mcp-server, TypeScript using @microsoft/MCP and Go using mcp-go.
Some Prerequisites🤓
Make sure your machine has at least one of the following: Python 3.x + pip or Node.js + npm or Go 1.20+! Any basic HTTP client (like curl or Postman) will also help for testing.
Workshop Breakdown:
Understanding MCP (20min)
Core concepts and message types
Tool definitions and schemas
System architecture and roles
Hands-on Development (30min)
Setting up your development environment
Implementing an MCP-compatible server
Building and testing your first tool
Testing & Integration (10min)
Testing with HTTP clients
Debugging common issues
Best practices for tool development
By the end of this hour, you'll have built a working MCP server that can interact with AI models in a standardized way. Perfect for backend developers looking to integrate AI tools into their systems!
Find a more thorough breakdown here.
Note: Setup and registration starts from 1.30pm, with the workshop beginning at 2pm.
