Addressing Barriers to Homework Engagement in Complex ADHD
As CBT/DBT therapists, we are excited to empower our clients with new skills, and know that homework practice will likely lead to greater improvements in treatment. Yet when it comes to actually doing the homework, we often see clients struggle. And for clients with ADHD (or other executive function difficulties), the barriers to homework engagement may be even higher or more persistent. How can we use CBT techniques to help clients overcome avoidance and overwhelm to benefit from homework practice?
This month’s case presentation will focus on treatment of an adult with complex ADHD (anxiety and ADHD), including:
Identifying common barriers to homework engagement, especially for clients with executive function challenges
Discussing flexible application of CBT techniques to help clients decrease overwhelm and build motivation
Sharing ideas for collaborating with clients to increase their sense of ownership and value gained from homework
We're looking forward to seeing you there!
