Race, Diagnosis, and Misinterpretation: A Case-Based Peer Discussion
Join us for our next peer consultation session, where we’ll present and discuss a case involving an African American woman who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) — a diagnosis that, on closer examination, failed to account for cultural, historical, and systemic context.
Many of the behaviors labeled as "symptoms" were, in fact, culturally responsive and appropriate reactions to chronic experiences of racism and marginalization. This session will offer space to reflect on how systemic bias can shape diagnosis, how cultural context can be overlooked, and what it means to truly practice culturally competent care.
We’ll open with a case presentation followed by open group discussion. All clinicians are welcome, whether you want to contribute actively or simply listen in.
This case will be presented by Jonathan C. Blassingame III, PhD, ABPP.
