VPP Insiders: to DSO or not DSO w/ Angela Kent
As Ontario considers its energy future, stakeholders in the province have recently turned their attention to the potential of a Distribution System Operator (DSO) model to accelerate the renewable transition. While the precise definition varies, DSOs can be thought of as more localized ISOs, facilitating grid services markets on a scale more akin to that of a distribution utility’s territory. In March, building on existing momentum, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association convened representatives from utilities (local distribution companies), regulators (the Ontario Energy Board), the Independent Electric System Operator of Ontario (IESO), and other organizations to explore key definitions and pathways to implementation.
This event presented stakeholders with a forum for open discussion of the benefits and challenges associated with DSO implementation, and created space for all participants to consider one key question: is a DSO model the best way to bring about a distributed energy future?
In this session, Angela Kent, who participated in the event as a facilitator and representative of the DER Task Force, will share key takeaways and provide context around the implications of a DSO model for the proliferation of VPPs more broadly.
In advance of the webinar, we encourage you to explore this report, which sheds light on where the DSO conversation stands in the province today.
