Raise your hand if you’ve ever been excited to share something with your Asian parents, only to receive a deflating response 😶

This could be a nervous laugh in response to your hug or “I love you” or a short “OK” when you share good news.

As an Asian American, it can feel challenging at times to hold both Eastern and Western cultural norms. And oftentimes with our Asian parents, it takes the extra step of “translating” what they’re doing or saying to be able to recognize the love in between.

Without this skill of translating, you may:

❌ Take their reactions personally when that’s not what your parent intended
❌ Harbor resentment as you count the times your parent misses the mark in showing their love towards you
❌ Getting trapped in thinking they don’t care

Learning to translate different love languages minimizes judgement towards another for how they naturally express love and helps us avoid fighting an uphill battle trying to change how they love.

Ultimately, both can exist - that we can translate and also ask for others to show love in a way that we are more receptive to receiving, but it takes intentional, conscious work to be able to do both.

Relational dynamics facilitators, Kevin and Stephanie will unpack these themes in this session. We’ll specifically explore:

❤️‍🔥 Making things fun: creating a lighter atmosphere by celebrating differences
❤️‍🔥 Inviting different expressions of love: how to ask for the way you prefer to be shown love
❤️‍🔥 Tools for relating: Invitation by Relating Between the Lines

It’s safe to say that Kevin and Stephanie’s Asian experience has lots of complexity, and while their experience isn’t representative of all Asian cultures, their intention is to create a space to normalize having conversations about these themes.
