​Hello Everyone! Since its debut in 2023, Crypto Art Seoul has established itself as a premier annual event for crypto art in Asia. Building on the success of last year’s launch, we are thrilled to return this year for our second edition.

​The theme for this year is “Cross-Pollination: Into the Phygital World.” We aim to explore the multiple facets of one of today’s most compelling concepts, “Phygital.” Experts from various fields, including Web3, new media art, virtual reality, AI, and digital urban archives, will share their ideas about the evolving Phygital landscape.

​Phygital, a compound of “physical” and “digital,” refers to the interaction between digital virtual and physical reality. While the concept may seem unfamiliar, it describes a world we’ve all experienced naturally, especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. We invite everyone curious about the future shaped by this overlapping space, where different realities intersect—be it physical and digital, materiality and non-materiality, online and offline, mind and body. We especially look forward to sharing diverse insights into the future of art, shaped by the convergence of Web3 technology and the arts.

​크립토 아트 서울은 2023년에 첫 선을 보인 이후, 아시아를 대표하는 연례 크립토 아트 행사로 자리잡았습니다. 작년의 성공적인 출범에 힘입어, 올해 두 번째 에디션으로 돌아오게 되어 매우 기쁩니다.

​이번 행사의 주제는 “교차-수분: 피지털 세계로의 이행 Cross-Pollination: Into the Phygital World”로, 오늘날 가장 주목받고 있는 키워드 중 하나인 “피지털(Phygital)”의 면면을 다각도로 탐색하고자 합니다. Web3, 미디어아트, 가상현실, AI, 디지털 아카이브 등 다양한 분야의 전문가들이 모여, 피지털을 둘러싼 여러 이야기를 공유합니다.

​피지털이란 물리적 공간을 의미하는 '피지컬(physical)'과 '디지털(digital)'의 합성어입니다. 디지털 가상현실과 실제현실이 상호작용하는 피지털 세계는 자칫 낯설게 들릴 수 있지만, 지난 코로나 팬데믹을 거치면서 우리가 자연스럽게 경험한 세상이기도 합니다. 현실과 가상, 물질과 비물질, 온라인과 오프라인, 정신과 신체 등 서로 다른 영역을 넘나들 수 있는 이 중첩지대가 이끌 미래가 궁금하신 여러분 모두를 환영합니다. 특히, 웹3 기술과 예술의 만남을 통한 새로운 예술의 미래를 살피고 다양한 인사이트를 나눌 수 있는 자리가 되길 바랍니다.

​This year’s theme, "Cross-Pollination," draws inspiration from the process where pollen from one species fertilizes another, resulting in diversity and unexpected discoveries. We aim to explore how various ideas, cultures, and technologies merge to create new forms of artistic expression. This event is designed for those who seek to transcend the boundaries of art and technology, expanding artistic possibilities in entirely new ways. Through the innovative concept of Phygital, we will envision and explore the future of art as we experience and imagine it together.

​올해의 주제인 “교차수분 Cross-Pollination”은 서로 다른 종 간의 꽃가루와 암술이 수정하면서 다양성과 의외의 발견을 탄생시키는 과정을 의미합니다. 우리는 다양한 아이디어, 문화, 그리고 기술이 융합되어 새로운 예술적 표현이 탄생하는 과정을 탐구하고자 합니다. 이번 행사는 예술과 기술의 경계를 넘나들며, 전혀 새로운 방식으로 예술적 가능성을 확장하고자 하는 분들을 위해 준비되었습니다. 피지털(Phygital)이라는 혁신적인 개념을 통해, 우리가 경험하고 상상하는 예술의 미래를 함께 그려보는 자리가 될 것입니다.

​Ania Catherine and Dejha Ti are an award-winning experiential artist duo who began their collaborative art practice under the name “Operator” in 2016. Described as “two critical contemporary voices on the international stage of digital art” (Clot Magazine) and an “LGBT power couple” (Flaunt), they combine their respective expertise to create large-scale conceptual works that are recognized for their poetic approach to technology. Understanding immersion as not merely a physical state but an emotional one, their approach leverages subtlety on a grand scale to evoke emotions rather than spectacle. Ti’s background as an immersive artist and HCI technologist, combined with Catherine’s experience as a choreographer, performance artist, and gender scholar, results in distinctive works that transcend mediums, bringing together environment, technology, and the body.

​Since their groundbreaking installation “On View,” commissioned by the SCAD Museum of Art in 2019, Operator’s work has explored themes of privacy, surveillance capitalism, and exploitative technologies. In the fall of 2021, the duo began transforming their Lumen Prize-winning piece “I’d rather be in a dark silence than” into a series of cryptocurrency-based artworks called the Privacy Collection. This ongoing NFT series delves into the tension between privacy and transparency within blockchain technology. For their upcoming work “Human Unreadable,” the artists have developed an on-chain generative choreography method, which will be documented and published as a white paper by Metalabel.

​아냐 캐서린(Ania Catherine)와 데쟈 티(Dejha Ti)는 수상 경력이 있는 체험형 아티스트 듀오로, 2016년에 Operator라는 이름의 공동 예술 활동을 시작했습니다. "디지털 아트의 국제 무대에서 두 명의 중요한 현대적 목소리"(Clot Magazine)와 "LGBT 파워 커플"(Flaunt)로 불리는 이들은 기술에 대한 그들만의 시적 접근법으로 인정받는 대규모 개념 작품에서 각자의 전문성을 결합합니다. 몰입이 단순히 물리적 상태가 아닌 감정적 상태라는 이해를 바탕으로, 그들의 접근 방식은 규모의 미묘함을 활용하여 스펙터클이 아닌 감정을 만들어냅니다. Ti의 몰입형 아티스트 및 HCI 기술자로서의 배경과 Catherine의 안무가, 퍼포먼스 아티스트, 젠더 학자로서의 배경은 매체에 얽매이지 않는 독특한 결과물을 만들어내며, 환경, 기술, 그리고 신체를 한데 모읍니다.

​오퍼레이터의 작업은 2019년 SCAD 미술관의 의뢰로 제작된 획기적인 설치 작품 "On View" 이후 프라이버시, 감시 자본주의, 그리고 착취적 기술이라는 주제를 탐구해 왔습니다. 2021년 가을, 이 듀오는 루멘 프라이즈 수상작 "I'd rather be in a dark silence than"을 Privacy Collection이라는 암호화폐 기반 아트워크 시리즈로 변환하기 시작했습니다. 이는 블록체인 기술에서의 프라이버시와 투명성 사이의 긴장 관계를 탐구하는 지속적인 NFT 작품 발매입니다. 다가오는 작품 "Human Unreadable"을 위해 아티스트들은 온체인 생성 안무 방법을 개발했으며, 이는 Metalabel에서 백서로 문서화되어 공개될 예정입니다.
