Eyes of Wonder: Session 006: Fulfillingness' First Finale (Summer, 1974)
Welcome to Session 006, as we continue our journey through Stevie's Classic Period.
We last left off at Stevie being at the peak of his powers with the release of the masterpiece Innervisions, where 3 days later he was involved in a serious car accident left him unconscious and in a coma. The only questioned that mattered that day was "is this the end?'
Stevie would awaken, slowly regain his strength and re-emerge with a body of work that reflected a sense of purpose and spiritual guidance.
The final result was "Fulfillingness' First Finale", a introspective stripped down work that balances joy, enlightenment, reflection, and spirituality.
This session is extra special, we'll be joined by our very first guest, our friend, Glyniss Wiggins, a graduate from New York University with a master's degree in journalism. Her work has touched on an array of topics from mental health awareness and stigmas and marginalized communities, uncovering history from notable N.C. landmarks, to highlighting underrepresented Black musicians and moguls across the south.
We're excited to have her perspective woven into this conversation!
We'll be deep diving into the making of the album, from the calm opener of Smile Please, to the spiritual plea of Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away, from the funky/playful grooves of Boogie on Reggae Woman, to the sharp political fire of You Haven't Done Nothin' aimed directly at Nixon. And the heart of it all, the haunting classical centerpiece on mortality, They Won't Go When I Go.
Welcome to Fulfillingness' First Finale, Stevie's most underrated album of the Classic Period.
