About Event

Join us for a 60-minute webinar led by Dr. Mark Horowitz, a leading researcher in psychiatric drug withdrawal and Scientific Co-Founder of Outro Health.

This session offers a detailed look at hyperbolic tapering—a neuroscience-based method designed to reduce withdrawal symptoms and improve outcomes for people coming off antidepressants.

As depression rates and long-term antidepressant dependence continue to rise, we have to ask: are there trusted tools to solve the overprescribing epidemic? And how do we help people transition off—safely, effectively, and with the supportive roadmap they deserve?

What You’ll Learn:

  • Real-world challenges: Most patients receive little to no support when discontinuing antidepressants and fewer are warned of the difficulty stopping these medications before they take their first capsule. Today we are faced with an epidemic of long-term antidepressant use, with most people in the US taking them for at least 5 years (while the intended use was < 1 year).

  • What withdrawal symptoms actually are: Withdrawal can involve cognitive, physical, and psychological symptoms that vary in severity and duration. Without proper training, these are often misdiagnosed as a relapse of the original condition (depression or anxiety)—leading many patients to be re-prescribed the very medications they had hoped to stop.

  • Why withdrawal happens: Learn the neurobiology behind these withdrawal symptoms and how the non-linear relationship between antidepressant dose and serotonin transporter occupancy explains why standard linear tapers often fail, and why hyperbolic tapering is the solution.

  • The science of hyperbolic tapering: Discover why small reductions at lower doses are critical—and how this method better aligns with neurobiological adaptation.

  • Outro's solution: See how Outro integrates hyperbolic tapering into real patient care using a scalable, clinician-guided model. Learn how our platform and protocols are designed specifically to support successful antidepressant discontinuation.

Mark will also address questions like:

  • How does hyperbolic tapering actually work in practice?

  • What does a typical patient tapering journey look like?

  • What tools and training do clinicians need to taper safely and effectively?

  • Does hyperbolic tapering apply to other drug classes (benzodiazepines, Z-drugs, or stimulants)

Format

The webinar includes a 40-minute presentation followed by a 20-minute Q&A. This session is ideal for clinicians, patients, caregivers, and those curious to better understand tapering protocols and emerging deprescribing standards.

Presenters

Speaker: Dr. Mark Horowitz, MD, PhD is a clinical research fellow in psychiatry at University College London and the co-founder of Outro Health. His work has helped reshape national guidelines on antidepressant withdrawal, and he is internationally recognized for his research on hyperbolic tapering and psychiatric drug dependence.

Emma Frati is a member of the Outro Health team with lived experience of polypharmacy during her time at Columbia University. She later earned a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience with a focus on statistics and business. Emma has worked in psychedelic and wearables research, co-authored a study on automated sleep scoring published in Sleep Journal, and previously consulted in the rare disease biotech space.
