Panel Discussion "No One Left Hungry: Food Access as a Fundamental Human Right"

We are back with the second event of our Climate Justice Series organized by ASSEDEL!

Following the successful launch event "Water Security and Human Rights: A Joint Challenge Affecting All" in May, We are delighted to welcome you to our upcoming panel discussion “No One Left Hungry: Food Access as a Fundamental Human Right, co-hosted by MEP Cristina Guarda (Greens/EFA), taking place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on July 8, 2025, from 15:00 (3 PM) to 17:00.

Food systems in Europe are currently facing a growing number of challenges due to the combined effects of climate change, geopolitical crises, and volatility in global markets. These factors contribute to rising food prices and supply disruptions, leading to increasing inequality in access to safe and healthy food among vulnerable and marginalised communities, which undermines their wellbeing and dignity.

We aim to analyze current food insecurity trends from a human rights perspective and explore actionable solutions with our panel of experts. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in discussion with the speakers.

Speakers:

Cristina Guarda is an Italian Member of the European Parliament from the Greens/EFA group. She will discuss the role the EP and the AGRI Committee plays in shaping the EU's approach to food security.

Almudena Garcia Sastre, EU Policy and Advocacy Officer at FIAN Europe, will present the current state of EU food security policies and explore their connection with local initiatives.

Christophe Golay, Senior Research Fellow at the Geneva Academy and legal advisor for the European Citizens' Initiative "Good Food For All", will join us to discuss the right to food in international law and the goals of the ECI.

Spyros Papadatos, secretary general of Rural Youth Europe (RYE), will focus on RYE's advocacy work on food security, and its efforts to promote awareness and community among young Europeans.

Léa Staraselski & Somhack Limphakd, representing Pour Sécurité Sociale de l’Alimentation, will explore their project aimed to integrate food into the general social security system, highlighting key concepts such as food democracy.

Marco Lucchini, co-founder and secretary general of Fondazione Banco Alimentare ETS, will highlight how food access can act as a first step toward social inclusion and share concrete examples of collaboration with local associations based on the principle of subsidiarity.
