Echoes of Time
Two Independent Documentaries by Chinese Filmmakers

This screening features two documentary works by Chinese directors: Grandma's Youth and Nostalgia’s Hands. Set across different time periods and locations, these films explore how individuals reclaim identity, endure change, and seek belonging in both historical and everyday contexts.

1. Grandma’s Youth (Work in Progress)
Grandma’s Youth is a feature-length documentary told from the first-person perspective of an 88-year-old Chinese woman. Looking back on a life shaped by war, political persecution, and famine, she recalls her path to becoming one of the first female university students in the early years of the People’s Republic of China. Through a rare female lens, the film offers an alternative narrative of 20th-century China.

Director: Nile Tan
Duration: 50 min
Year: 2025
Language: Mandarin
Subtitles: Chinese, English

2. Nostalgia’s Hands (Work in Progress)
Nostalgia’s Hands takes us into the heart of an immigrant family of watch repairers in New York’s Chinatown. Through the eyes of shop owners Chen, a seasoned immigrant, and Lin, a newcomer, we witness their meticulous craft and the intertwining of their hopes, sorrows, and dreams that shape their lives.

Beneath the surface of daily routines lies the connection between 'time' and memory, nostalgia and belonging; 'repair' serves as a healing act for a resilient community.
