Multi-Agent Systems: Patterns and Pitfalls: In this talk we consider the challenges that arise in real-world multi-agent system deployments. To ground our discussion, we will describe a case-study around agentic data intelligence, abstracted from recent client engagements at Emergence. We discuss some key issues we encountered, including gaps in data semantics and domain knowledge, exacerbated by LLM codegen unreliability and stochasticity. We will spend most of the talk discussing lessons learned. We will briefly describe design patterns that may help mitigate these problems, including the role of memory, self-improvement and automated agent creation.
