Monument Peak hike
Join us for another Saturday adventure, a great hike at Monument Peak in the East Bay.
The hike will be challenging and take about 4:30 to 5 hours (depending on the group's pace). It isn't easy because it involves a roughly 2300 ft elevation gain and a continuous upward climb from the beginning.
At the time of publishing this event, we had one car and three open spots (we are carpooling there; options of using public transit and cabs are open).
If you want to bring a vehicle and can give rides to others, message us on our WhatsApp community's hiking group, and add your name and/or car to the spreadsheet (don't change someone else's entry—honor code).
If the weather forecast changes unexpectedly, we might change the plans on Thursday or Friday.
What to Expect:
We will start from the Sany Wool Lake Parking Lot on Tualrcotis Trail, hike to Monument Peak, and return through another trail to close the loop
Stunning views of East Bay, Fremont, Livermore, Oakland, and possibly even SF from the trail and the peak
Gusts of wind at times
A clear but hot day with a high UV index
May have bugs, cows, and wildlife on the trail
Dogs on leash are allowed on the trail
Total distance: Approximately 9.1 miles
Elevation Gain: About 2300 ft elevation gain
Duration: About 4:30 to 5 hours of moving time on the trail
Parking: Parking Lot at the trailhead
Restrooms: One available near the trailhead
Park entrance fees of $6 (can be paid by Credit Cards)
The park opens at 8 a.m.
What to Bring:
Plenty of water and electrolytes
Light snacks
Comfortable hiking shoes with ankle support
Sun protection (not much shade on the trail)
Wind cheater or extra layers
Hiking poles for steep downhills
Hiking etiquette:
Bring everything you need—water, food, anything else—in a bag that you can carry
Have great treads on your hiking shoes soles, OR have hiking poles (ideally both)
Yield to people running on the trail
Yield to people going uphill while going downhill and vice versa
By signing up, you agree to the carpool policy: We share the cost of fuel, tolls, parking, and any other fees for all cars across everyone who carpools. We believe that's the least we can do to assist the people bringing their vehicles to help us carpool.
Cancellation policy: If you sign up for the carpool and cancel less than 24 hours before the hike starts, we'll demote you to waitlist by default for the subsequent three hikes.
Where to Meet:
People traveling from SF, we'll meet near the Ferry Building at 7:00 a.m. on the South Side (R-EVOLUTION side) of the Embarcadero. We’ll only wait five minutes for latecomers and will start promptly after that to stay on schedule. If you’re running late, let us know via our WhatsApp community, and we’ll help you join the group at the parking lot or on the trail.
If you are directly joining us at the trailhead, plan to arrive by 8:00 a.m.
We’ll finish the hike back at the starting point. Those interested can join us for an optional late lunch or meal and hang out for a bit after the hike.
