About Event

Workshop Audience:

Researchers and academic staff of all career stages.

Outline:

Do you find yourself avoiding saying no to things because you don’t want conflict?  Do you feel guilty to ask for what you need?  Boundaries can be challenging to set and maintain, yet they are essential for healthy functioning.  Working in higher education especially, multiple demands are made of us, particularly around student support and teaching, administration, publishing and making funding applications.  As such, establishing healthy boundaries becomes important really for maintaining our health and energy.

In this interactive workshop, we will explore what beliefs you need to challenge in order to set healthy boundaries.  This will involve digging a bit deeper into why we feel guilty setting boundaries, and we will be exploring some of our negative self-talk here.  We will also explore which of our boundaries need most attention, how we can say no effectively, and what positive beliefs will help us going forward.  We will also identify useful techniques you can take away to help you to maintain healthy boundaries.

Learning Outcomes:

Following this workshop participants will have:

  • Gained an understanding the key elements of establishing health boundaries

  • Explored tools and exercises for building healthy boundaries

  • Explored shifting limiting beliefs to more positive beliefs

  • Worked through a practice scenario

  • Worked collaboratively in a constructive and supportive environment

Facilitator:

Dr Jo Collins is a coach, trainer, researcher and consultant specialising in supporting researchers and academics in the Higher Education sector.  Over the years, in her roles as teacher, coach, and consultant, Jo has helped many academics and researchers to identify where their boundaries have been challenged and work towards re-establishing them.  As a coach, in particular, Jo has helped academics and researchers grapple with guilt around setting boundaries.  Jo has been working in Higher Education for the last twenty years, and part of her research explores how doctoral students set boundaries around their research, and where they experience and manage guilt.
