From Condé Nast to Forbes, from The New York Times to Mother Jones, publishers are taking legal action against AI companies for utilizing journalistic work without permission. Do they have a valid case? This panel will explore the potential legal frameworks for publishers in their dealings with AI companies. We will discuss how current intellectual property, copyright and other laws protect publishers, and examine possible legal strategies for safeguarding journalistic content in the age of AI. Join us for an in-depth discussion on the legal battles shaping the future of media and technology.

Panelists

Kevin Goldberg is the First Amendment specialist at the Freedom Forum where he works to educate the public about the substance and importance of the First Amendment. Prior to joining the Freedom Forum, he served as Vice President, Legal for the Digital Media Association, and was a partner in two law firms, where he focused on First Amendment, FOIA and intellectual property Issues.

Megan Gray is a lawyer focused on information, Internet, innovation and intangibles. Within those fields, she has worked as corporate counsel, litigator and lobbyist for startups, established companies, non-profit organizations, individuals and trade associations. Megan has litigated hundreds of copyright cases and actively organized visual art creators as chief lobbyist in the orphan works push. Megan has also defended free expression rights for publishers and search engines. She is the founder of GrayMatters Law & Policy. Previously, she was general counsel and vice president of public policy at DuckDuckGo, a senior enforcement attorney at the Federal Trade Commission, and interim vice president of government affairs for the Newspaper Association of America.

Ashkhen Kazaryan is a tech policy expert specializing in digital free speech, surveillance reform, and the intersection of constitutional rights and technology. She is currently a senior fellow at Stand Together, where she spearheads initiatives to defend free speech online and advocate for government surveillance reform.
