Artist Talkback & Tour of a Solar Punk Mixed Reality Dance Installation

Join us for an immersive experience! This unique event offers a rare opportunity to engage with the talented creatives behind this collaborative artwork and process, watch a behind the scenes short film, and be guided through the mixed reality artwork.
The short film will kick us off, uncovering the 10 month project process - from student and faculty discussions and performances, to motion capture at artist studios, augmented reality and coding of the digital data, to laser cutting and growing custom mycelium molds.
During the artist talkback, you'll have the chance to interact with the creative minds behind this innovative project, including Cornish leadership, Future Arts team and artists. Gain insights into their inspiration, creative process, and the challenges they faced in bringing this mixed reality experience to life.
Following the panel discussion, embark on a guided tour of the installation, where you'll witness the fusion of dance and mixed reality technology. Marvel at the seamless integration of virtual and physical worlds, as the performers transport you to a realm where boundaries dissolve. ASL and Image translation accessibility services will be provided.
About the collaboration
Working across disciplines of dance, mixed reality and sculpture design, Future Arts has designed a large-scale, interactive installation, visible from the Lenora side of the Ivey on Boren building. Multiple tools, such as augmented reality (AR), AI-driven motion capture, and mycelium are used to intertwine and expand creative interaction through this public art mural.
The installation is titled Cut, Crush, Decay to symbolize three Cornish College sculpture and dance student collaborations, supported by Cornish Faculty in dance and art departments. Each student collaboration is integrated into the final work designed by Future Arts collaborators Sabin Timalsena and Joshua Borsman.

Cornish is known for its interdisciplinary approach for arts education. Nellie Cornish, the founder of Cornish College of the Arts, was passionate about interdisciplinary education because she believed that the arts should be integrated into every aspect of learning, and that artists should be well-rounded individuals who could collaborate with people from different disciplines.
Cornish believed that a strong foundation in the arts, including music, dance, theater, and visual arts, would provide students with a unique perspective on the world and help them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She also recognized that the arts were closely connected to other fields, such as science, technology, and business, and that interdisciplinary education could help students to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the world.
