Become // an evening among the art of Alexis Sones
Join us for a special, site specific installation of Alexis Sones's latest series of work, "Become." For one night only, her paintings return to the arms of nature, set in Umlauf Sculpture Garden as offerings to light, water, and time. Among trees, stone, and a flowing creek, the work becomes a living altar—an invitation to witness art as ceremony.
About the Artist
Alexis Sones is a painter living and working in Austin, TX. In 2018, following the sudden restoration of her eyesight after 25 years, she shifted her artistic focus from the external world of nature scenes and portraits to the inner landscape of the imagination.
Her materials are oil, gouache, and acrylic. Her gesture is serpentine, organic — color leads, and form emerges.
About the Work
The series “Become” is part of an evolving body of work that draws inspiration from the alchemical principle solve et coagula: to break apart, and to re-form.
In these paintings, shape asserts itself. Bold lines emerge from fluid fields of color. Once-separate parts rejoin—seeing, remembering, becoming new.
This is work shaped by subtraction—by the removal of media, image, and external noise. In the absence, the subconscious speaks. As mythologist Martin Shaw says: “to uncolonize the imagination is to begin again.”
