About Event

About 1/3 of human-caused carbon emissions are linked to food (learn more). The EPA estimates that 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents are produced by food loss & waste alone each year (learn more).

Join Gage Mitchel (from Modern Species) and Jaxie Friedman (from Atomo Coffee) for a discussion with other local PNW organizations working to create a more circular & sustainable food system.

Event Agenda

3-3:15 PM Registration & Networking

3:15-4:15 Expert Panel (Indoors)

4:15-5 PM Picnic Discussions (Outdoors on the attached lawn)

Expert Panel

The session will begin with a panel discussion with leaders working at the intersection of food, waste, climate & circularity. We will dig into key challenges, solutions and levers for change within our food system.

Panelists:

  • Gage Mitchell - Founder & Creative Director, Modern Species (Panel Moderator)

  • Jaxie Friedman - Sustainability Manager, Atomo Coffee

  • Mariah DeLeo - Good Food Economy Program Director, Seattle Good

  • Aaron Czyzewski - Director of Advocacy and Public Policy, Food Lifeline

  • Heather Yu - Policy Advisor, Cascadia Law Group PLLC & Program Manager, Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment

Picnic Discussions

After the panel, attendees are invited to join us outside on the lawn for picnic style discussions where we can dig into subjects in more detail and build connections with other passionate food change-makers. There will be a few facilitated group discussions with relevant food sustainability themes and opportunities for informal networking.

We will provide some light food & drink, a few picnic blankets, tents for shade, and some outdoor games - frisbee, spike ball, cornhole, etc. If you'd rather just network on the lawn & participate in some outdoor activities, that works too!

Additional Discussion Facilitators:

  • Sukhada Palkar - Owner & Operator, Kind & Plenty

  • Nick Budden - Founder & Innovation Director, Flavor Forward Strategy

Georgetown Steam Plant Venue

  • This venue is super cool, very unique & a bit off the beaten path. If navigating via GPS, it will take you to a parking lot right near the Georgetown Steam Plant & there will be signs (and volunteers) there to direct you towards the venue. Once you get in, you'll see that the Georgetown Steam Plant is a former industrial facility and has lots of interesting machinery to look at and explore. This is not your typical event venue - come prepared to navigate around large tanks / machinery & expecting a very casual and unique event vibe. FYI, the only bathrooms on site are porta potties with a hand washing station.

Accessibility & Logistics

  • PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE FOR WATER! We will have a water refill station with light snacks provided and are accepting donations for event support.

  • This event is ADA-accessible. Please read the National Historic Landmark facility safety notice.

  • What to Bring for the Picnic: If you are not able to sit on the ground or stand for 30 minutes then please bring a chair to sit on for during the picnic discussions. All should feel free to bring your own blankets or chairs to help make for a more comfy picnic experience! Light food/drink will be provided but you're welcome to BYO snacks/beverages as well.

  • Transportation: Bus line 132 has stops nearby. Please carpool! Parking is available on-site and in the nearby Georgetown residential neighborhood.

  • COVID Protocol: Per the Washington State Department of Health, masks are no longer required. "People may want to continue to wear a mask for added protection against COVID-19, especially those who are immunocompromised, living with someone immunocompromised, or who may just feel safer wearing a mask. Everyone should assess their own personal risk when making this decision."

  • We have 50 chairs and may run out. Please bring a pillow and blanket if you plan to arrive late and would like to sit.

  • We will be taking photos and videos that may be published on social media. If you would not like your photo taken, please notify the event hosts upon arrival. Event hosts are not liable for audience photo publication but we will manage our owned media.
