Funding of TREs – the NHS SDE Infrastructure, and beyond
About
Recommendation 2 within the recent Sudlow report https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13353747 highlights the need to “implement an acceptable, transparent investment strategy for health data infrastructure and models for data access cost recovery and pricing”. The proliferation of Trusted Research Environments (TREs) and Secure Data Environments (SDEs) covering health and other sensitive data continues. The Funding and Sustainability of this model is of major concern.
The UK TRE community have been working collaboratively on funding models for SDEs and TREs through its working group. This work has collected input from a variety of existing TRE/SDEs and has now completed its goals. To disseminate the working group’s phase 1 activities, these results will be presented and to evaluate whether a new phase of work is wanted by the community, a discussion is proposed.
