​Southeast Asia's linguistic tapestry - encompassing over 1,000 languages, code-switching, and low-resource dialects, presents unique challenges for AI.

​The SEA-LION team addresses this gap with a multilingual model designed to understand and generate text in regional languages like Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, Vietnamese, and Tagalog. To truly measure AI's effectiveness in Southeast Asia's complex linguistic landscape, the SEA-LION team developed SEA-HELM (Southeast Asian Human-Evaluated Language Benchmarks), an evaluation framework tailored to regional challenges. The framework was co-created with local linguists and communities to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance. SEA-HELM's rigorous design allows for precise evaluation of SEA-LION's performance across Southeast Asia's languages, revealing strengths in tasks where global models struggle. The team's ACL-published research will also cover how we intend to address some of our future multilingual learning and safety efforts.
