What to wear
Wear your PFLAG or Pride swag, either from your chapter or from PFLAG National. Don't have any? Consider purchasing at https://shop.pflag.org/ I will see if some will be made available for our group, but wearing any pride gear will be appropriate. We are one PFLAG Family!
What to bring
Individuals - Check the weather forecast. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, light jacket (if needed), a reusable water bottle, comfy walking shoes, and your preferred signage (for example, my sign says "Proud Asian mom of a gay kid")
Chapter leaders - I'll have a PFLAG banner for the Southern Pacific Region. Up to you if you'd like to also bring your banner or make a poster of your chapter instead.
Where to park
The Long Beach Parade attracts thousands of participants and spectators. Parking is a challenge. And expect road closures.
The parade starts at 10am. Get there early. There is street parking surrounding the start of the parade. Some marchers choose to park at the end of the parade where there are parking structures. Just know you'll need to walk to our starting point where we will be gathered at our assigned parade #.
Alternative ways to get there
E Ocean Blvd & Alamitos Ave is a nine minute walk from the Metro A Line (Blue) at the 1st Street Station stop. That would put you at the end of the parade so you'll want to walk the route to the parade start to meet up with us.
Uber or Lyft to the start is also a good call. If you could be dropped off close to this address, it would put you close to where folks should be gathered for the parade start: 2999 E Ocean Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90803
What to expect
The 1.2-mile route is flat along Ocean Blvd starting at Lindero Ave and heading west to Alamitos Ave. Suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, scooters, etc. Be aware you will walk at least twice that distance because the route is one-way and you'll need to get back to your car or mode of transport.
If this is your first time, we line up in order of our parade # east of Lindero Ave. It's a leisurely walk, lots of interaction with the crowds who are ALWAYS really happy to see PFLAG there. In fact, it can be a bit emotional as spectators see such supportive parents and allies marching in pride.
At the end of the parade, enjoy the festival, eat lunch together, take pictures, have fun!
Most of all, have fun!
