About Event

Design I/O has been creating large scale, experimental interactive installations for over 15 years. Their work often starts quite experimental in nature, but through their iterative process and exploration it is transformed into something seamless, magical and completely new.

Co-Founder Theo Watson will share his approach to building interactive installations: from initial concept and prototypes, to the final experience. He will dive into novel techniques for experimental, full body interaction as well as approaches to support open exploration and inclusive design.

He will also talk about some of their recent work using AI models and ML techniques, sharing the pitfalls and moments of delight that come in developing experiences that live on the edge of the impossible.

About Theo

Theo Watson is an award winning interactive artist whose work is born out of the curiosity and excitement of designing experiences that come alive and invite people to play. His work has been shown at the Tate Modern, Ars Electronica and is in the permanent collection of MoMA.

Theo Watson together with Emily Gobeille lead creative studio Design I/O, an interactive design studio that was the 2020 winner of the Cooper Hewitt’s National Design Award for Digital Design.

Design I/O has been at the leading edge of immersive interactive installations and new forms of storytelling for over 15 years. Their recent work includes an emotion driven interactive robot arm as well as the world’s first live streamed, VR music video album. Their clients include Adobe, The New York Hall of Science, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Tech Interactive, Bell Labs and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Theo is also the co-founder of the openFrameworks project, an open source library for writing creative code in C++.
