Code as Canvas: Three decades in digital art

​John F. Simon Jr. is a multimedia artist and Software Art pioneer whose work and installations are found in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. In 2011, he collaborated with Icelandic singer Björk to write an app for her album, Biophilia.

John will present a survey of his Software Art practice leading up to his newest piece, ComplexCity(2000/2023).  Starting with software drawing tools in 1989, Simon has spent more than three decades exploring the ways algorithms and art can be combined.  One of his early pieces, Every Icon (1997) was in the Whitney Biennial and led to a series of software art appliances and larger sculptural art. As the internet has developed more ways to store, monetize, and trade digital objects, Simon has moved forward to offer originals and updated versions of his classic earlier works.
