About Event

Gretchen Andrew's Facetune Portraits challenge the pervasive influence and availability of digital editing tools on our perception of beauty and identity. By applying the same filters and edits typically used on social media photos to physical portraits, the works expose the distorted and often grotesque results that can occur when these tools are applied to real-world subjects.

In this conversation, the curator Nora O' Murchú together with the artist Gretchen Andrew chat with Julia Reiser and Jaqui Dresen, Berlin-based content creators and the subjects of the portraits showcased in the exhibition. Together, they aim to raise the questions about the commodification of the self, the impact of algorithms on our understanding of beauty, and the ownership of images in the digital age. By "dancing with the algorithms" and exploring different forms of sabotage, Gretchen, Nora and the portrait subjects will discuss if or how it is possible to subvert the networked ideal of self and explore the pressures of manipulation that can be used to shape our online experiences.

This event is part of Facetune Portraits. Hybrid Studio exhibition, featuring series of paintings and generative art by artist Gretchen Andrew. Visit the exhibition during Berlin Art Week, September 11-15, 2024.
