WHAT IS THIS SERIES ABOUT?
Helping people successfully work together is one of the most fulfilling parts of our jobs as facilitators.
It’s also the most challenging.
What do you do when you ask a question and no one responds?
How do you keep people from dominating a conversation and get everyone involved?
What do you do if someone says something offensive that upsets the group?
How can we make a plan when so much of every session depends on how the group shows up?
In Facilitating for the Future you will learn frameworks and methods that will allow you to feel confident and in control when facilitating meetings, workshops, or any session where you want group input.
WE'LL EXPLORE HOW TO
Increase participation, the variety of voices, and types of shares in your sessions. No one wants to ask a question and hear crickets. By mixing up the ways you ask for participation you'll guarantee more voices in the room offering different perspectives.
Build trust within a group by mitigating social risk and vulnerability. It can be intimidating to share our thoughts in front of other people. Learn strategies that build trust and psychological safety while increasing participation and lowering anxiety in your sessions.
Respond to conflict in a way that leads to productive exploration and transformative change. We’re afraid of conflict arising in our spaces because we aren’t sure how to move through it in a way that is productive for everyone in the group. Learn how to balance acknowledging harmful comments without isolating or ostracizing anyone from the group.
Plan for the unexpected changes and the emergent needs of a group. When we create spaces where people are participating and contributing, we also create spaces where new needs of the group can emerge in the moment. Learn to prepare ahead of time and how to make quick decisions in the moment to pivot without losing control.
WHO’S LEADING THE SESSION
Meg Bolger! An expert facilitator, social justice educator, and participatory educator.
Meg has been facilitating for over a decade and is currently the head of Facilitator Cards and POP Facilitation. Meg has co-founded numerous projects and businesses focused on facilitation including The Safe Zone Project, FacilitatingXYZ, Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation, and Facilitator Cards and spent much of the last decade training trainers from around the country (and world) on the art of facilitation.
Meg’s foundations in facilitation came from her work in social justice education and Gender & Sexuality workshops. She believes that facilitation is one of the key skills of educators, leaders, organizers, and facilitators who are trying to bring about meaningful change in the world. Her work in social justice spaces also gave her years of navigating hot topics, challenging conversations, and loaded disagreements in group settings.
Meg is passionate about the subtleties of what helps groups work, learn, collaborate, and connect with each other. She loves to break down the art of facilitation into skills that people can use to help humans collaborate, communicate, and connect better together.
Meg believes that as leaders, educators, trainers, and facilitators, we can make our spaces places that people feel good and want to be in. Her mission is to share everything she knows about facilitation to support everyone who is doing meaningful change work in the world.
WHAT WILL THE SESSIONS BE LIKE
Our Zoom workshops are highly participatory sessions. Besides a mid-point break, everyone will be participating throughout.
Each session is limited to 100 participants. We cap at 100 so that we can still do pair-breakout rooms (Zoom limits to 50 breakout rooms) and have lots of meaningful small-group conversations.
We’ll use chat and live polling throughout the sessions to bring everyone’s voice in and usually hear from at least 15-20 different voices in the main room over the course of the workshop.
Each workshop flows a little bit differently and we’ll use a lot of different modalities across the sessions including journaling, pair shares, live-polling, chat, fishbowls, small group work, interactive handouts, and more.
Each workshop will start right at the hour and we will close the door to the workshop after 10 minutes to ensure that the group has a cohesive learning experience.
