About Event

Do you wonder how science and current dog research could help you in caring for and training your dog? Are you aware that human learning theories can be applied to dog training techniques?

Most importantly, are you ready to nerd out on some animal and human behavior science?

We are hosting Maddie Messina, MA, and Founding Trainer at Paws For Thought Dog Training to tell us all about it!

Join us for this free event to learn:

1. What research is currently informing modern-day dog training techniques?

2. How do human motor skill learning theories apply to dog training techniques?

3. What is Contextual Interference Theory and how can we apply it in our training practices on a daily basis?

Speaker Bio: Maddie Messina describes herself as part dog trainer, part animal behavior enthusiast. She has been studying animal behavior since entering undergrad, where she was focused mainly on primate cognition. Maddie has a Master’s degree in Animal Behavior and Conservation and performed research at The Thinking Dog Center in NYC where her focus was on applying a human motor skill learning theory called the Contextual Interference Effect to dog trick training. With the guidance of Dr. Sarah Byosiere and Gal Ziv, she completed her thesis work in 2021 after applying this theory to 16 dog participants.

Through her newest venture, Paws for Thought Dog Training, she hopes to continue providing training support to the families she meets and share her knowledge of canine behavior. Her ultimate goal is to educate clients and provide them with the stepping stones for behavior change so they can walk away from the training experience empowered to continue on their own.
