Join us for a special workshop with our amazing guest speaker Jess King as they walk us through inclusive screenwriting practices and their new book. “Screenwriting for Social Transformation" invites filmmakers to examine the role that screenwriting paradigms play in shaping how characters with historically marginalized identities have been (mis)represented on screen. Participants will brainstorm creative tactics to combat harmful representation and reconsider their screenwriting practice towards equity and inclusion. This is a great session for screenwriters and filmmakers interested in storytelling that reflects and honors the complexity of identity and lived experience in the modern world.
Jess King is an educator, scholar, and interdisciplinary filmmaker. Jess teaches courses in screenwriting, independent television, and film analysis at DePaul University’s School of Cinematic Arts. Their current creative scholarship revolves around frameworks for reimagining screenwriting for radical equity and inclusion. King is the author of the forthcoming book Inclusive Screenwriting for Film and Television (Routledge.)
