Socratic Society
Join us for the inaugural meeting of Socratic Society, where we will listen to (and make) arguments for and against a weekly resolution in a symposium-like format, and hopefully leave with new insights!
This week’s resolution: Is it morally wrong to participate in gossip?
“Gossip is pervasive and complex. It lubricates and wrecks social relationships. Many people openly confess to loving “a good gossip” yet acknowledge that gossiping, while often gratifying, is sometimes morally problematic…it amounts to a particular kind of failure to treat others…with the concern and respect they are owed as persons.” -Cécile Fabre

Schedule:
** 6:15 PM: Opening and Introduction ** Learn the ethos of our society and the structure of our symposium.
** 6:30 PM: Resolution Presentation ** We'll introduce the resolution at hand, setting the stage for informed debate and introspection. Your initial vote will mark the starting point of our collective exploration.
** 6:40 - 7:30 PM: Structured Dialogue ** This is the heart of our assembly. Speak, listen, and reflect as each member presents their stance, supported by personal insight, scholarly knowledge, or philosophical pondering.
** 7:30 PM: Reflective Re-Vote ** After a session of thoughtful dialogue, we reassess our positions. Has the tide of opinion shifted?
** 7:40 PM: Informal Mingling ** We will move over to Paxti’s, where we will continue the conversation over pizza and drinks.
