Make the most of your high holiday experience by setting intentions with a soulful Jewish learning class to kick off the month of Elul! Elul is the 6th month of the Biblical calendar, the month set apart for repentance in spiritual preparation for the High Holidays. We will explore 3 of the Tikkun Midot (character traits) of worry, equanimity, and truth and their meanings, then craft an individual 30-day plan for reflection. Led by Madeline Sherman and CKYA board member Jacquelyn Null. 

Elul Jewish Learning Event

Shabbat is about elevating the mundane. So let's get high- high up that is on the 18th floor! Join Madeline and Mat Sherman in our downtown apartment for a community Shabbat dinner. 

We'll start with camp-style services led by song leader Mat, followed by a delicious catered meal from Pita Jungle of falafel, hummus, pita, and Mediterranean salads. Feel free to bring additional tapas (appetizers) or desserts of your own.

Anotha day, anotha hike. This upcoming Saturday let's take on a Phoenix favorite...Squaw Peak! We will park at the base, and hike the steep two miles and enjoy views of all of Phoenix at the top. Note, the hike is ranked hard on All Trails. See you there!

We will be joining up with our friends at the Moishe House Pod for a crisp winter hike in North Phoenix. This is a 4.2-mile out-and-back trail near Phoenix, Arizona. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 3 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, running, and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Gratitude allows you to notice your blessings and create balance from life’s difficulties. Mindfulness helps you handle tough times with grace, acceptance, and surrender. Together, these practices nurture what the “Higher Self” within you.

Join Madeline and Rabbi Bonnie for a 3-week exploration of mindfulness topics during the month of November and cultivate appreciation and awareness of the holiness within you.

Pre-Chanukah Shabbat Oneg

Carpool up North with us to see the beautiful red rocks of Sedona covered in snow. We'll get dinner at the famous Southwestern restaurant Elote Cafe after our hike!

Though many people will recommend you to visit Devil’s Bridge in Spring or Fall, there is something unique about visiting this trail in December.

As you hike on Devil’s Bridge, you will get to see the beautiful view of red rocks covered in white. The trees and even the cacti clad in white sheets of snow. You will never experience something as dazzling as this in any other season. The area is fully open, so come to Devil’s Bridge Trail, where even the heat is wrapped in snow.

Sedona Day Trip- Wintery Hike and Dinner

Engaged and newly married couples! Join us for a fun night with latkes, donut bar, and hanging out with other couples. We will also learn a text or Torah to prompt some rich discussion about relationships. 

Jewlyweds Chanukah Party at Risa's

Mazelpalooza is the most happening Jewish young adult event of the year! What better way to spend Christmas eve than with hundreds of your Jewish friends, getting down on the dance floor?1?1 This year's event is at The Duce, a favorite downtown spot. 

We will meet at Madeline and Mat's apartment for some drinks and apps before heading over to The Duce (a short 7-minute walk!) around 9:30pm. The vibe will be more of a chill cocktail party rather than college "get s**t faced."

 Mazelpalooza Classy Cocktail Pre-Game 

Shabbat on Chai is BACK! This time we'll be popping bottles of champagne as we celebrate the Sabbath and the "almost" new year on Dec 30th. Consider this a pre-new year's celebration, Kosher-style. $10 charge to purchase food.

Shhhhh.... these events are TOP SECRET.We're doing something fun and quirky to start the new year off. Each month we will join together for a Shabbat service or meal and then head to check out a local **hidden** speakeasy. The locations will only be disclosed to those who RSVP by the Thursday before the event. 

Our first speakeasy visit will be located in the neighborhood called High Street.

Hint: A Coffee shop by day turns into a classic speakeasy at night. The menu includes craft cocktails and a few appetizers/flatbreads to share.

will take a new format in the Spring, led by our young professional staff, Madeline and Mat Sherman. We know that our teens are very focused on making the most of their high school experience to prepare for college, and we want to support them by helping them make connections to alumni and mentors from colleges. Keep reading for more details about this 

 where you will create your college dream list, explore majors, meet professionals in your career field of choice, experience Jewish life on a college campus, learn tips to ace the application, + get matched with your own personal mentor.

Join Jews Who Hike and Camp for another hiking adventure in the Superstiion mountain range. Check out this 3.8-mile loop trail near Tortilla Flat, Arizona. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 39 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

We'll meet at the trailhead at 9:30am and should return by around 11:30am so we can head to an optional brunch around noon.

This is a very popular area for hiking and mountain biking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

We will meet at the trailhead at 9:00am. Bring water and a snack. 

We may head to get brunch after for those interested!

Tom's Thumb Hike

Get crafty with your lover and make your own Glass Mezuzah to symbolize the home you are building together! 

Price is $18 per mezuzah. We recommend that each couple purchase 1 to work on themselves as it can be hard to paint the same one- but you do you!

Join Congregation Kehilah for a Jersey Boys theme purim spiel, a show put on my fellow congregants that is sure to have you up out of your seats grooving to the best tunes by Franki Vallie and the Four Seasons.

Join us for our second event in the Shhhbat Speakeasy Series. Enjoy a Shabbat meal and pay a visit to one of our favorite speakeasies in Old Town Scottsdale. As usual, the location will ONLY be revealed to those who RSVP by the Tuesday night before the event as we plan to make a reservation.

About: This speakeasy is a spinoff of the original in New York City, established in 1993 by John McDonald. Although the NYC location is no longer in operation, the Phoenix location is thriving. If romance is in the air, this speakeasy will complement your vibe. Dressing to impress is recommended. Its wooden walls, dusky lighting, and fellow swanky drinkers will have you sipping in class.

It's been a minute but we hope that everyone is settling into a groove for 2023! We are continuing to meet new Jewish young adults everywhere we turn- it's madness. Who let out the secret of how cool Arizona is becoming?!?! Just kidding, we're excited to see that our community is growing 😎

​⭐ Monday, Feb 27th - Jewlyweds D.I.Y. Mezuzah Making for newly married  (within 1-3 years of marriage) and engaged couples.
​⭐ Friday, March 3rd- Our second Shhhhbat Speakeasy Series where we surprise you by trying out a cool hidden speakeasy in Old Town Scottsdale.
​⭐ Monday, March 6th- Watch your peers put on a hysterical Purim Spiel to the tunes of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (a little "who loves you pretty baby" and "let's hang on to what we've got") and enjoy a Hamantaschen happy hour. 
​⭐  Join us for St Patrick's Day for the third installment of our Shhhhbat Speakeasy Series.
Lastly, I wanted to give a quick shoutout to one of our INCREDIBLE members, Aleeza Kaplan who is now the official 🤘 Phoenix Community Hub manager 🤘 for the organization OneTable. OneTable provides funding  and empowers folks (21-39ish) to find, share, and enjoy Shabbat dinners, making the most of their Friday nights.

Can you feel it? That blank slate, new year feeling? We hope everyone had an exciting new years eve celebration! We enjoyed seeing much of you for Mazelpalooza and New Year's Eve Shabbat. Our community members celebrated a milestone in 2022 - new jobs, new friends, engagements, weddings, new homes, and so much more! We are just in awe of all that you do and accomplish. We can't wait to see what's in store for everyone this next year!!
Speaking of which, we have a new totally TOP SECRET Shabbat series. We're doing something fun and quirky to start the new year off! Each month we will join together for a Shabbat service or meal and then head to check out a local **hidden** speakeasy. The locations will only be disclosed to those who RSVP by the deadline set before the event.

It's beginning to look a lot like Chanukah! ⭐

Dear friends,
Have we mentioned lately that we are grateful to you for being a part of the CKYA community? Well... you get gratitude... and you get gratitude... we all get gratitude! Because SERIOUSLY, we truly appreciate your support and most of all friendship for all that we do here at CKYA <3 
Last month, we enjoyed not one, but two hikes! One in partnership with our great friends Rachel and Mat at the Moishe House Pod. If you haven't met them yet, follow their Facebook page to learn about more of their amazing events. We also kicked off our 3-week mindfulness series Holy Bodies with some rockstar women and wow did we get deep exploring the Jewish perspective on breath. Thank you all for an inspiring first class!
As we round out November, it is such an opportune time to re-focus our energy on the work of our souls. We have one last event upcoming in November! We are attending Sutra Studios' donation-based flow class on Thanksgiving morning at Coronado Park. RSVP so we can make sure to coordinate where to meet :)
In December, we have some FUN STUFF planned. It's about to get HYPE. 
Thursday, Dec 15th- Jewish Learning Class on the Story of Chanukah (click to RSVP)Another great opportunity for all my Torah lovers and/or those who enjoy deep conversations. We'll probably have a latke and some gelt too. 
Sunday, Dec 17th- Day Trip to Hike in Sedona (Click to RSVP)Day trip up to Sedona to see the gorgeous red rocks covered in snow, and do a famous hike Devil's Bridge followed by a warm meal. Sedona in winter is a must-see! 
Saturday, Dec 24th- Mazelpalooza Classy Cocktail Pre-Game (Click to RSVP)On Christmas eve, we will be attending the annual Mazelpalooza event hosted by the Center for Jewish Philanthropy. It's going to be an amazing night of dancing. We'll be hosting a classy-as-f**ck pre-game before heading over to The Duce where the event is being held. If you have ever felt nostalgia for your college nights, now is the chance to relive them, though we promise to provide some nice remedies to prevent hangovers
Friday, Dec 30th Shabbat on Chai- New Years Edition (Click to RSVP)Shabbat on Chai is BACK! This time we'll be popping bottles of champagne as we celebrate the Sabbath and the "almost" new year on Dec 30th. Consider this a pre-new year's celebration, Kosher-style. Party will be disco-theme so dress in your best disco glam or 70s outfits. 
Chanukah- CALL FOR EVENTS! Chanukah goes from Sun 12/18-Sun 12/25. We wanted to see if any of YOU were interested in hosting a casual Chanukah night event... if so, hit us up! We'll bring everything you need to you- the people, decorations, and food. And the best part, is you don't even have to leave your house to get there! ;)

December Events - Cocktails, Chanukah, & Chilly Hikes

Winter is setting in and we're excited about the upcoming secular holiday season! In case you didn't know, Chanukah overlaps Christmas this year, so hopefully, those of us in secular jobs will have some time off to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights 🕯️
We will kick off our Jewish Learning Circle- Holy Bodies in just over a week. There are still two spots left, so if you were hoping to apply, please do so here by Sunday, 11/13!!  Apply for Learning Circle listed under "Madeline Dolgin-Phoenix, AZ" 
We won't have Shabbat this month 😢 so we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to spend Shabbat with our friends at Moishe House Phoenix who have an upcoming Friendsgiving Shabbat on Friday, 11/11. RSVP here.

November Hikes and Cocktail Party!

This Fall we are running our 2nd learning circle focused on the topics of mindfulness and gratitude starting on Nov 20th. In this class, you will have the opportunity to learn alongside like-minded people about this messy, awesome, confounding, outrageous thing we call life!

What are the topics?
Week 1: Breath How does breath show up as an integral part of human beings? How might we express gratitude for something inherent to our existence? What Jewish spiritual technologies are offered?
Week 2: Rest In an ever-going world, what might taking meaningful rest look like and how might it change our well-being? How might we interact with the idea of a Sabbath as Jewish tradition’s spiritual technology? Is a time of rest inherently counter-cultural? Or could it support us holistically in our modern lifestyles and pursuits? How can the essence of Shabbat help us create a “rest practice” in our modern lives?
Week 3: Mindful Eating What does it mean to eat mindfully? How might connecting to the source of our food open up spiritual opportunities for us? What infrastructure does Jewish practice provide in developing a wellness practice around mindful eating?

IYUN learning circles are an eclectic collection of folks who gather over a few weeks for a new kind of conversation and to deepen their understanding of Judaism — on their own terms. 
At the Well We create spaces of belonging to learn about our bodies and to connect with transformative Jewish rituals.
Congregation Kehillah Young Adults An offshoot of local synagogue Congregation Kehillah,CKYA is an effort to give "post college pre family" young adults a synagogue to belong to and a community to join of like-minded peers.  
When is it? 
3 Sundays in November - 11/20, 11/27, and 12/4. Plus 1 Shabbat dinner on 12/9.
What if I can't make ALL of the sessions, but still want to participate? Please apply anyway!

Oh, trust and believe, we get that. We... really really get that. But let’s be real, you probably scroll on social media at least 2 hours a week right? You’ll be able to pat yourself on the back for spending this same amount of time, unplugged. You owe this to yourself :)
Do I need experience with Hebrew or Torah? I never went to/been a while since /hated Hebrew School…
CKYA Learning Circles are for an eclectic collection of folk. No prerequisite experience is necessary. Just a willingness and desire to learn, grow, and ask. We make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our job is to help you explore the tradition in a safe space and find your own place Jewishly on your terms.
Do I need experience with meditation?  This will be a great class for beginners and experts alike! We will provide guided meditations and instruction for those who are new to these types of contemplative practices. 

How is this course different from other Jewish learning programs?
If you want to learn more about Jewish tradition, a lot of people offer world-class, incredible classes, and experts are more accessible than ever through online lectures and public events. Here in Phoenix, we’re doing something different. We’re trying to build people who really get to know each other, and we’re really into exploring our tradition in a modern way. Yes, I mean looking at the Torah (aka the millennia-old big Jewish conversation) and its uncanny ability to hold up a mirror to our lives. 
Do I have to wear a black hat or grow out a long beard to participate?
We usually wear jeans, but you do you.
