About Event

At this moment, do any of us need to be reminded of the value in being able to communicate your ideas clearly?
Our next happy hour will be on Wednesday July 17th, featuring a panel discussion on the art of communicating complex scientific ideas. We'll have four panelists each of whom has mastered science communication through different media mediums. This event will bring together experts who have mastered the craft of translating intricate scientific concepts into compelling stories, making them accessible to a broader audience.

Our Panelists:

Jason Carman led content at Astranis and now incubating a new venture focused on storytelling. He is the creative force behind S³ (Saturday Startup Stories), a web series that dives into the journeys of startups at every stage and has thought extensively about telling stories in biology. His work chronicles the trials and triumphs of these innovators, and aims to inspire a broader audience to pursue their own missions and ultimately increase the number of people trying to change the world.

Wellington Bowler is a filmmaker and experimental sound designer, and currently the director/producer of the Genentech podcast (5 Seasons)-Two Scientists Walk Into A Bar and the Buck Institute podcast (2 seasons)- We’re Not Getting Any Younger, Yet!. His film projects have won National Emmys, were shortlisted for the Academy Awards and in 2009/2010, and he won two Grammy awards as a sound engineer for banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck’s Throw Down Your Heart album/documentary.

Julia Bauman is a grad student at Stanford University, using high-throughput CRISPR screening to understand gene regulation. She uses TikTok and Twitter to disseminate one-minute explanations of scientific publications to broad audiences. She's also published views in Nature Reviews Cancer on how narrative techniques can enhance the impact of scientific findings.

Elliot Hershberg is also a grad student at Stanford University, where he combines his extensive backgrounds in biology and computer science to develop tools that empower biologists with new capabilities. Through his newsletter, The Century of Biology, he brings to light the most innovative data, companies, and ideas shaping the frontier of biology, highlighting cutting-edge scientific advancements and exploring the philosophical underpinnings and worldly implications of these technologies.

As always, our happy hour will also host scientists of various disciplines working in biotechnology and age-related diseases, from a host of companies, institutes and other organizations friendly with Gordian, Character and Deep Origin, not to mention academics, investors, and just people curious about biotechnology in general. Our events are meant to be open to the broader community, and you are welcome to invite friends and other guests.

The happy hour begins Wednesday July 17th at 18:30, with the panel from ~19:15 - 20:00. Our address is 486 Cabot Rd in South San Francisco. Food and beer/wine provided.

Please note that we don't have parking for >100 people, so we encourage carpooling/ride sharing. If you arrive and the lot is full you can probably find a nearby lot or street parking that's not used evenings.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!
