About Daniel
Daniel is a registered social worker, TV writer, speaker, Autistic self-advocate, and children's author.
The majority of his day is spent supporting autistic people with their mental health and he's also written the book "Do You Want to Play? Making Friends with an Autistic Kid". His proudest career accomplishment so far has been creating the character of Bruno the Brake Car, the first autistic character in the 'Thomas & Friends' franchise. Seeing ourselves represented in the media we consume is so important, and it's his goal to to continue to make that happen!
Who's this event for?
People interested in mentorship and connections around script and TV writing, social work, speaking, and autistic wellbeing. Anyone curious about these topics from a neurodivergent-lens is welcome :)
The Plan
The first hour
Daniel will introduce himself, share a bit about his career story, and talk about how he connected with Thomas and Friends and wrote their first autistic character
Then he'll share actionable tips on writing good autistic characters, diving into the process of how he developed Bruno and how he wrote his book
We’ll end the first segment with an interactive Q&A, where you can ask Daniel about his career, tips, or experiences in a low-pressure environment
The remaining 30 min
For anyone who'd like to stay on and meet other attendees, we'll use this as an opportunity to open up breakout rooms with prompts to help you connect
Prompt 1 - what brought you here?
Prompt 2 - will be determined based on areas of interest that emerge during the interactive chat with Daniel
Note: This event will be recorded. Recordings of the event will be made privately available to ND Connect members and hosted under the "resources" page of the ND Connect platform.
